The Legacy of Boney James

Now at age 63, Boney James is determined to keep on serving the greatest jazz hits that the world has ever heard. As the the Top 3 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Artists of the Decade, he has new material that keeps on pouring the best notes today, as seen on his recent "Slow Burn" record.

From the onset, the man has always been a jazz prodigiy, switching over to the saxophone at the age of 10. Heavily influenced by the R&B Motown genre and by the work of saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., he pursued music full time after graduating from UCLA. With years of touring and jam sessions with some  legendary names in the industry, such as The Isley Brothers, Randy Crawford, and Bobby Caldwell, James made a name for himself as one heck of a talented man.

You might wonder how the moniker "Boney" James was penned... Well it dates back to '96 when he was on the road with Randy Crawford, who joked about his physisque with fellow bandmates, saying "We'll have to start calling you 'Boney' James!" The name stuck around and became a memorable quirk that predates his solo success.

From 1992's debut release "Trust" down to his 18th album "Slow Burn", it's evident that his passion never ran out. At 63, he's keeping it all up with constant tours and live gigs that take fans on a smooth journey across his jazz hits.

"I just turned 63, but I honestly feel 20 and healthier than ever. My enthusiasm for doing this job hasn’t waned at all. I’m still like a kid in a candy store," he shared with Billboard as he's currently on the road.

He sure is the real deal when he became the first artist to hit 20 number-one singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Airplay chart. With billions of streams across platforms, it sure is clear that people are so drawn to his jazz masterpieces.

At Jazz After Dark, witness his legacy come to life in a special night in Grand Prairie. Don't miss out by booking your tickets now!
