Jazz After Dark: The MLK Cool Out Edition

The MLK Music and Comedy weekend at the Texas Trust CU Theatre around Martin Luther King Jr. Day has become an annual fixture - one that Grand Prairie looks forward to with bated breath. 2026 will be no different - sweet, sweet jazz tones will be warming up the cool air in Grand Prairie, and you’re invited!

This year’s line-up is even bigger and more impressive than the previous years. Not only will audiences be dazzled with the musical mastery of Jazz Funk Soul, Jeff Lorber, Paul Jackson, Jr., and Everette Harp, but arranger, composer, reeds player, lead bass player, funkmeister, and renowned jazz historian Marcus Miller will be headlining the evening - now THAT is what we’re talking about!

Marcus Miller

Marcus Miller is a jazz legend. Few musicians can take pretty much anything down several different improvisational roads and arrive at the same destination: absolute astonishment. Marcus Miller is a collaborator and wingman of some of the original jazz giants, including Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Luthor Vandross, Wayne Shorter, and David Sanborn, but is also an icon in his own right. To date, Marcus Miller has produced thirteen studio albums, four live albums, and seven massive singles, including Lovin’ You, My Best Friend’s Girlfriend, Free, Detroit, and On The Road. He is also the recipient of two Grammy Awards out of plenty of nominations, was appointed as a UNESCO Artist For Peace, and in 2021, was awarded with Bass Player magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

It’s undeniable: whenever Marcus Miller takes the stage, it’s bound to be good - from his supercharged, rich percussive sound to his masterful musicianship, from his impressive versatility that sees the musician blend funk, soul, jazz, and fusion to his technical virtuosity, from dazzling, jaw-dropping bass solos to his second-to-none melodic sensibilities and musical storytelling.

It’s undeniable: Jazz After Dark MLK 2026 will have no shortage of relentless grooves, melancholy, euphoria, and terrific musicianship.
