Who would have thought that a comedy rock outfit has found incredible commercial success in the U.S.? Well, Americans love their comedy, and they certainly love classic rock. It also helps that Jack Black and Kyle Glass are masters of their craft. As we all saw in the 2003 film School of Rock, Black is an excellent singer and a gifted guitar player. Meanwhile, his partner in crime, Glass, objectifies everything that has nothing to do with a conventional rockstar – except for his insane virtuosic skills on the guitar. These two comedians decided in 1994 that forming a rock band would be a good idea. But the rock duo didn’t fully come to fruition until 1997 when the duo scored a deal with HBO to broadcast a three-episode series from 1997 to 2000.

By the end of the ‘90s, Tenacious D was supporting major rock bands like the Foo Fighters, Weezer, Tool, Pearl Jam, and Beck. And this all happened before the release of their self-titled debut album in 2001. Their debut single, “Wonderboy,” was met with high regard, but it wasn’t until they released the follow-up single, “Tribute,” that the duo found their breakout hit. The 2002 single topped the U.K. rock chart and charted in three other countries. Although the song didn’t chart in the U.S., it made quite a mark on the heavy metal scene and helped Tenacious D amass a cult following. On the other hand, the album peaked at number 33 on the Billboard 200 and charted in eight different countries. The album sold over one million copies in the U.S., earning Tenacious D their first platinum certification.

In 2006, the duo released their follow-up album, The Pick of Destiny. In conjunction with releasing the album, Tenacious D produced and starred in a feature film of the same name, with the album working as the official soundtrack. The record features notable performances by rock legends, such as Ronnie James Dio, Dave Grohl, and Meat Loaf. The album spawned the single “POD,” their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 78. Meanwhile, the album soared to number 8 on the Billboard 200.

Six years later, the Black and Glass released their third album and their highest charting effort to date. Rize of the Fenix peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the critically-acclaimed single “5 Needs.” In 2014, Tenacious D participated in a tribute album for legendary metal band Dio. They performed a cover of “Last in Line,” which later won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2015.

For another six years, Tenacious D dropped another epic studio album Post-Apocalypto. During the recording, the band personnel included John Konesky on guitar, Spiker on Bass, and Dave Grohl on drums – all of which were also present during the previous albums. The album was supported by an animated Youtube series of the same name to support the album’s release.
